Materials changed how repairs are performed

Structures increasingly combine high-strength steels, aluminium and adhesives, and each has documented rules about what may be heated, straightened, welded or riveted.

Some sections must be replaced rather than repaired because heating them destroys the properties that make them protective in a subsequent crash.

Aluminium repair also requires physical separation from steel work to avoid contamination, which means dedicated equipment and space.
