Several of the busiest American national parks now require a reservation for a specific arrival window. The constraint being managed is not the size of the park but the size of its infrastructure.

Parking is the true capacity limit

A park may cover hundreds of square miles, and almost all visitors arrive at a small number of trailheads, viewpoints and visitor centres reachable by car.

Those places have a fixed number of parking spaces, built decades ago for a smaller visiting public.

Once the lots are full, arriving vehicles circle, park on verges, or queue on the access road, and the problem becomes traffic rather than crowding.

Roadside overflow damages what people came to see

Cars parked on shoulders compact soil, kill vegetation and widen informal paths that then erode.

They also block the road itself, which matters more than aesthetics because emergency vehicles need to reach injured hikers on the same single route.

A park with one main road has no alternative path when that road is obstructed.

Queues at the gate create their own failures

Entrance stations process vehicles at a fixed rate, and demand arrives in a morning surge rather than evenly.

Queues of several hours form outside the boundary, on public highways the park does not control, affecting people who are not visiting at all.

Idling traffic in a canyon also concentrates exhaust in exactly the settings the park exists to protect.

Timed entry spreads arrivals rather than reducing them

A reservation system assigns each vehicle a window, so the same daily total arrives across the whole day instead of between eight and ten in the morning.

The effect is to raise usable capacity without building anything. Afternoon slots that previously went unused absorb demand from the morning peak.

Many parks pair this with shuttle services, which move far more people per parking space than private cars do.

The system shifts the burden onto planning

The cost of the approach falls on spontaneity. A visitor can no longer decide on the morning to drive up, and slots for peak season are claimed quickly.

Parks mitigate this by releasing a portion of permits the day before, holding back walk-in access at some entrances, and exempting early morning and late evening arrivals.

The underlying trade is a familiar one in public land management, where free access to a finite resource is replaced by rationing once demand exceeds what the site can absorb.
